Joe Taslim is playing a superpowered fighter in James Wan's movie

Joe Taslim has landed a role in the James Wan-produced "Mortal Kombat".

10 Jul – The upcoming live-action adaptation of the fighting video game series "Mortal Kombat" finally has a confirmed cast attached to star.

Indonesian martial arts actor Joe Taslim has closed the deal to star in the reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 38-year-old, whose works include "The Raid", "Fast and Furious 6", "Star Trek Beyond" and "The Night Comes for Us", has been tapped to play the character Sub-Zero. The superpowered fighter is one of the original characters in the 1992 video game, who is known for his attacks involving ice and long-running rivalry with Kombatant, Scorpion.

So far, no other names have been announced as part of the cast.

Produced by James Wan under his Atomic Monster banner, the movie is set to begin production in southern Australia later this year.

The new "Mortal Kombat" will serve as a reboot to the movie series, after a planned sequel for the 1995 movie and its 1997 sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation", was cancelled.
